Back-to-School Dental Tips for Kids: A Healthy Smile Starts the School Year Right

As summer winds down and school supplies start filling shopping carts, it’s also the perfect time to check in on your child’s dental health. A bright, healthy smile can boost confidence and help your child focus on learning—not on a toothache. Here are some back-to-school dental tips from our team at Maitland Pediatric Dentistry to help your child start the school year with a smile.
1. Schedule a Dental Checkup Before School Starts
The start of the school year is a busy time, but it’s also one of the best opportunities to schedule a routine dental exam. Regular checkups allow us to catch small problems—like cavities—before they become bigger (and more painful) issues.
If your child plays sports, this is also a good time to ask about custom mouthguards to protect their teeth.
2. Stock Up on Smile-Friendly Lunches and Snacks
What your child eats at school can impact their oral health. Try packing:
- Fresh fruits and crunchy vegetables
- Cheese sticks or yogurt
- Water instead of juice or soda
Avoid sticky snacks, sugary treats, and frequent sipping on sweet drinks, which can increase the risk of tooth decay.
3. Establish a Consistent Brushing Routine
Getting back into a school-year routine can help reinforce good habits:
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Floss once a day
- Consider using a kid-friendly timer or brushing app to make it fun
Make brushing part of the morning and bedtime schedule so it becomes second nature.
4. Check Their Supplies—Including a Toothbrush!
New shoes and pencils? Don’t forget a new toothbrush. Replace your child’s toothbrush every 3–4 months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Letting your child pick one in their favorite color or character can make brushing more exciting.
5. Watch for Signs of Dental Issues
Be on the lookout for:
- Complaints of tooth pain or sensitivity
- Swelling or redness in the gums
- Bad breath that doesn’t go away
These could be signs your child needs to see the dentist sooner rather than later.
