Oral Health Awareness Month: Building Healthy Smiles in Maitland
February is Oral Health Awareness Month, and at Maitland Pediatric Dentistry, we’re celebrating by taking dental education beyond our office walls and into the community.
This month, Dr. Aloise had the opportunity to visit local schools and speak with children about the importance of caring for their smiles. These visits are one of our favorite ways to make dental health fun, approachable, and easy for kids to understand.

Teaching Kids That Healthy Smiles Can Be Fun
During his talks, Dr. Aloise shared simple, age-appropriate lessons about:
- Why brushing twice a day matters
- How cavities form
- Why baby teeth are important
- How healthy habits now protect grown-up smiles later
Through interactive conversations and demonstrations, kids learned that taking care of their teeth doesn’t have to feel like a chore — it can actually be something they feel proud of.
Tips & Tricks for Healthy Teeth at Home
We know parents are busy — so we love sharing realistic, easy-to-follow strategies families can use every day.
Make Brushing a Two-Minute Party
- Use a fun timer or play your child’s favorite song for two minutes.
- Let kids pick out their own toothbrush (character brushes can make a big difference!).
- Try brushing together — kids love copying what they see.
Don’t Skip the Floss
Even if teeth are small, flossing matters once teeth touch.
Tip: Floss picks are often easier for little hands to manage than traditional floss.
Choose Smile-Friendly Snacks
Limit sticky, sugary snacks that cling to teeth. Instead, opt for:
- Cheese
- Yogurt
- Apples
- Carrots
- Nuts (if age-appropriate)
Water is always the best drink between meals. It helps rinse away food particles and keeps mouths hydrated.
Protect Teeth at Night
After nighttime brushing, avoid juice or milk before bed. Once teeth are clean, only water should follow. This small habit can dramatically reduce cavity risk.
Make It a Routine
Consistency is key. Brushing in the morning and before bed — every day — builds habits that last a lifetime.
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, establishing a dental home by age one and maintaining routine visits is one of the most important steps in preventing cavities and promoting lifelong oral health.

Why Community Education Matters
When children learn about dental health in a positive, engaging environment, it helps reduce fear and build confidence. Dr. Aloise’s visits aren’t just about teaching brushing techniques — they’re about helping kids feel empowered to care for their smiles.
At Maitland Pediatric Dentistry, we believe that strong oral health habits begin early — and that education is one of the most powerful tools we have.
Partnering with Parents for Lifelong Smiles
Oral Health Awareness Month is a reminder that healthy smiles start at home and grow with community support. Whether it’s making brushing fun, choosing tooth-friendly snacks, or scheduling regular checkups, small daily choices make a big difference.
If you’d like to schedule your child’s next visit or invite Dr. Aloise to speak at your school or community group, our team would love to connect. Together, we can keep Maitland smiling bright.
