What Is the Dental Filling Process?

At Maitland Pediatric Dentistry, we use tooth-colored fillings made of a composite resin material to repair cavities with seamless results. The procedure involves numbing the area around the affected tooth and removing the decayed tooth structure. Next is cleaning the space, placing the filling material in the cavity, and shaping it to resemble a natural tooth. The last step is using a special light to harden the filling material. Once in place, your child's filling will look just like natural tooth enamel.

Is There an Alternative to Traditional Dental Fillings?

We are pleased to offer an alternative cavity treatment called silver diamine fluoride or SDF. Silver is an antimicrobial agent that destroys cavity-causing bacteria, while fluoride remineralizes the tooth enamel, reversing early decay and preventing cavities from getting worse. Together, the power cavity fighters stop tooth decay in its tracks, all without the needle, the drill, or sedation.

SDF is an excellent solution for some children with early decay in baby teeth, buying time until a child is ready to get a traditional filling or the tooth naturally falls out. It is helpful for very young children, those with extensive tooth decay, and children with special healthcare needs.
