The good news is that having a tooth extracted is not as scary as it sounds, and in most cases, it is a simple procedure. Why Would Your Child Need a Tooth Extraction?

There are several reasons we may recommend having a tooth extracted, including the following:

An Abscessed or Infected Tooth: Left untreated, tooth decay can progress, leading to complications such as a tooth abscess or infection. If the damage in a tooth is beyond repair, removing it may be the best option to protect the gums, bones, and surrounding teeth.
Orthodontic Treatment: Your child may need to have one or more teeth extracted as a component of an orthodontic treatment plan. That helps create the space needed for the remaining teeth to move into alignment.
Incoming Permanent Teeth: Sometimes, a baby tooth does not fall out when it should, interfering with the incoming adult teeth. We may need to extract one or more baby teeth to allow the adult teeth to come into their proper position.

The Tooth Extraction Procedure

Kids typically require what is called a simple extraction, which is a quick, straightforward procedure. We start by numbing the area with a local anesthetic for your child’s comfort. We are also happy to offer nitrous oxide sedation, or “happy air,” to help your child relax during treatment.

Once your child is comfortable, Dr. Aloise will use a kid-sized tool to wiggle the tooth gently until it is free. This is usually a very quick process. We will then place a tiny piece of gauze on the extraction site to stop any bleeding. We will provide you with aftercare instructions and tips on how to care for the area to ensure a speedy recovery.

What Is a Space Maintainer?

When extracting a baby tooth, we always consider your child’s future oral health. Leaving a gap can sometimes result in the neighboring teeth shifting out of place, interfering with the alignment of the adult teeth when they are ready to come in. That is why Dr. Aloise may recommend a space maintainer, depending on the location of the tooth and your child’s unique needs.

But what exactly is a space maintainer? As the name implies, a space maintainer is an oral device used to maintain the space left by a prematurely lost or extracted baby tooth. Space maintainers help the permanent teeth come in the correct alignment, reducing, or even eliminating the need for braces or other orthodontic treatments later on.
